Rotator Cuff Injury

What is rotator cuff injury?

The rotator cuff is a group of muscles and tendons that stabilise the shoulder joint and help with arm movement. An injury to this area—such as a strain, tear, or inflammation—can cause shoulder pain and limit your range of motion.

What causes rotator cuff injury?

Common causes include:

  • Overuse or repetitive movement (common in certain jobs or sports)

  • Lifting heavy objects overhead

  • Age-related wear and tear

  • Sudden trauma, like a fall or pulling motion

  • Poor posture or muscle imbalance around the shoulder

What does rotator cuff injury discomfort feel like?

  • A dull ache or sharp pain in the shoulder, often worse with movement

  • Pain when lifting or reaching overhead

  • Weakness in the arm or difficulty performing everyday tasks

  • Disturbed sleep, especially when lying on the affected side

How can physio help?

  • Relieve pain and reduce inflammation

  • Restore strength and mobility in the shoulder

  • Improve posture and alignment to prevent re-injury

  • Support a safe return to activity or sport

What treatment will Village Physio do?

After a full assessment, treatment may include:

  • Shoulder stabilisation and strengthening exercises

  • Manual therapy to release tight muscles and improve movement

  • Postural training and shoulder control work

  • Advice on activity modification during recovery

  • Stretching and range of motion exercises tailored to your goals

What can I do to reduce my discomfort whilst I wait for an appointment?

  • Avoid reaching overhead or lifting heavy items

  • Use ice or heat to manage discomfort

  • Keep your shoulder gently mobile within a pain-free range

  • Maintain good posture, especially when sitting

  • Use a cushion for arm support when resting or sleeping
